Manuel Neuer has made a remarkably clear prediction for Jonas Urbig’s future – publicly paving the way for the 22-year-old to become FC Bayern’s future number one. In his interview with Sky, the captain made it clear how highly he rates his young colleague and how much he supports his development.

Neuer spoke about Urbig’s future with a naturalness that carries a lot of weight in Munich. „It’s a lot of fun working together in our goalkeeping group. It’s no problem for him that he can and will succeed me,“ explained the 39-year-old. It is particularly remarkable that Neuer not only accepts the generational change, but actively supports it.

The 2014 world champion emphasized that there is enormous support for the youngster within the goalkeeping group: „He definitely has the support of Sven and myself. We are a good team.“ Neuer once again underlines what is particularly important to the club: a harmonious, competitive trio with clear roles – but without ego friction.

With the two loan returnees Alexander Nübel (VfB Stuttgart) and Daniel Peretz (Hamburger SV), two further alternatives would be available in the summer of 2026. However, Neuer committed to Urbig very early on.

A smooth but clear transition

Neuer also made it clear that Urbig is considered a possible successor not because of his potential, but already because of his performances: „He has already shown in the games that he can do it, and he will continue to do so.“ The youngster has impressed in his appearances so far with his calmness, presence and strong reflexes – qualities that have long been registered in Munich.

At the same time, Neuer describes how seriously and professionally the trio work on a daily basis: „We support each other every day, we always try to push ourselves to the limit so that the bar is raised a little higher.“ A sentence that shows that the door to the future number one is not simply opened – Urbig is shaped in these daily duels.

Neuer leaves Bayern’s future open

It remains to be seen when Urbig will take over from Neuer, but if Neuer hangs up his goalkeeping gloves at the end of the season, Urbig will be promoted to number one as early as the 2026/27 season

Neuer himself is keeping a low profile regarding his future: „I would also take my time. It’s really also about the moment to say: Okay, how is my body? How is my health? Does it make sense to continue? And I have to delay this decision a little longer.“
