João Palhinha no longer plays a role in FC Bayern’s plans. Club officials have recently made it unmistakably clear that the Portuguese player is expected to leave the club this summer. For Max Eberl and Christoph Freund, selling João Palhinha is one of the most important tasks of the remaining transfer window. Despite having a contract that runs through 2028, the midfielder is on the list of players to be let go and is set to leave the record champions after just two years.

Most recently, Sporting Lisbon and Aston Villa were mentioned as potential suitors. However, neither club is reportedly willing to pay the transfer fee demanded by Bayern. According to consistent media reports, the Munich club is asking for at least 25 million euros for the 31-year-old.

Newcastle is keeping an eye on Palhinha

As reported by ESPN, Newcastle United could now enter the fray. According to the report, the Magpies are considering Palhinha as a potential replacement for Bruno Guimarães, whose move to Arsenal appears to be drawing closer.

According to the report, the Portuguese player is considered one of the top candidates for the vacant defensive midfield position. His experience in the Premier League, in particular, speaks in his favor. While Palhinha was never able to truly establish himself at Bayern Munich, he continues to enjoy an excellent reputation in England as a tenacious ball-winner following his successful stint at Fulham.

For Bayern Munich, interest from Newcastle would be good news. Unlike other suitors, the Magpies have the financial resources to meet Munich’s demands in principle.

According to the report, Newcastle first wants to finalize the transfer of Guimarães. Only then will the club actively pursue the signing of a replacement—with Palhinha as one of the most promising candidates.

For Munich, selling the Portuguese player would be an important step in their ongoing roster planning. Sporting director Max Eberl recently stated publicly that Palhinha, along with Sacha Boey and Bryan Zaragoza, no longer has a place in the record-holding champion’s plans.

Whether Newcastle turns its interest into a concrete offer will therefore likely depend largely on the outcome of the Guimarães transfer. From Bayern Munich’s perspective, a financially strong Premier League club would currently be the best chance to find a satisfactory solution for João Palhinha’s situation.
