Newcastle United are interested in signing Hellas Verona defender Rafik Belghali, according to TuttoMercatoWeb.
The Magpies are in the market for a new right-back following the departure of Kieran Trippier.
Newcastle need a new defender to provide competition for Valentino Livramento.
They are pursuing Blghali after a top season in Italy in which he bagged two goals in 26 appearances. He helped to keep six clean sheets.
Big Serie A clubs were linked with him, but Newcastle could now make a move for the 24-year-old Belgium-born Algerian international star.
Newcastle are also pursuing Amar Dedic. The Bosnian full-back enjoyed a productive debut campaign in the Portuguese top-flight last season.
Newcastle should go for Dedic if it comes down to a choice between them.
While Belghali is a sensible addition, Newcastle should be looking for the player who can offer the greater all-round impact, and the Bosnian has the edge.
Dedic is the stronger player in duels, giving Newcastle more security when they are forced to defend one-on-one situations.
He is also more productive in the final third, which could be particularly valuable for a side that needs more attacking output from its full-backs.
His ability to carry the ball is another major advantage, allowing him to drive Newcastle up the pitch and break lines himself rather than simply recycling possession.
Perhaps most importantly, Dedic is more progressive with his passing.
He is willing to look forward and move the ball into dangerous areas, something that would fit naturally into manager Matthias Jaissle’s aggressive style.
Belghali is certainly an attractive option, but Dedic should be the player they prioritise.
