Newcastle hiring Brentford club doctor Naheem Ali | OneFootball

According to NY Times, Newcastle United are bringing in Brentford’s Dr Naheem S Ali to a senior role in their medical team.

Ali is expected to succeed Dr Paul Catterson, Newcastle’s club doctor since 2009, who is leaving to become the Premier League’s chief medical officer. He is currently on gardening leave at the west London club.

Catterson told Newcastle in May that he wanted to depart and has been working his notice, including helping conduct medicals for some summer signings. It is understood he remains contracted for around another three months.

The expectation is that Ali may arrive as soon as next month. Whether that would allow Catterson, previously the Premier League’s longest-serving head of medicine at club level, to start his new role is unclear while he serves his notice.

Ali has been Brentford’s lead doctor for two years, having previously worked with Millwall and Barnet. His wider experience includes England and Great Britain Hockey, MK Lightning and Cricket Ireland.

Newcastle performance director James Bunce, who joined in 2024, oversees medical and performance operations. He and sporting director Ross Wilson have led the process to appoint a new senior doctor.

Newcastle and Brentford were approached for comment.
