Newcastle United are preparing a formal opening offer for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha after holding initial talks with the player’s representatives, according to Sky Sports Germany.

After recently sanctioning the sale of Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal for £75 million, the Magpies have made strengthening their central midfield a primary objective ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

Having tracked Nmecha’s progression closely throughout his time in the Bundesliga, Newcastle’s recruitment team have now escalated their interest by reaching out to the 25-year-old’s camp to outline their project.

Nmecha, a Germany international who spent his formative years in Manchester City’s academy, fits the exact profile Newcastle are seeking to add dynamism and physical presence to their midfield.

Standing at 6ft 3in, his ability to drive forward with the ball, combine in tight spaces, and contribute defensively makes him an ideal fit for Mathias Jaissle’s system.

However, agreeing a deal with Dortmund will require Newcastle to dig deep into their pockets, and it remains to be seen how ambitious they are willing to be, having generated around £250m from player sales this summer.

Dortmund, who signed Nmecha from VfL Wolfsburg in 2023, consider the midfielder a valuable asset and are expected to demand around £85m to part ways with him.

With the club keen to finalise their summer business before the opening Premier League weekend, Newcastle are expected to step up their search for midfield reinforcements in the coming days.

Victor Froholdt, Manu Kone, and Angelo Stiller have all been earmarked as targets, but Nmecha appears to be at the front of the queue currently.
