Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of teenage defender Cathal Heffernan after his departure from AC Milan.
The 18-year-old had featured in two pre-season friendlies for the Magpies’ Undr-21 side whilst on trial last month and now has joined on a permanent basis.

Heffernan, who has played for the Republic of Ireland Under-19 side, joined the Italian Giants halfway through the 2021/22 season from his hometown side Cork City, and featured in the club’s youth teams.
He will now link up with Newcastle’s Premier League 2 side, where he is joined by another Irish recruit in goalkeeper Reece Byrne, who arrived on Tyneside last month having joined from Bohemians.
