Neymar enters the final phase of his recovery this week after surgery on the meniscus in his left knee, with a return to Santos targeted for early February.

According to Globo.com, he has been splitting physiotherapy and gym work between home and the CT Rei Pelé, and has already been back among team-mates. He is expected to begin physical transition work in the last week of January, which could leave him ready for the opening rounds of the Campeonato Brasileiro.

Santos begin their Série A campaign on 28 January away to Chapecoense at the Arena Condá. The stadium’s synthetic surface reduces the chances of him being available for the first round.

In an optimistic scenario, the second league match, against São Paulo on 4 February, is viewed as a possible return date, dependent on how he responds in ball work. Another option under consideration is 15 February against Velo Clube at Vila Belmiro in the Paulistão.

Santos are handling his comeback with patience after he played through the pain late last season and was vital in avoiding relegation. Club and player opted for rest days before the operation on 22 December, with an initial recovery estimate of one month that is completed next Thursday. Progress has been on schedule so far, lifting optimism that the star could be back soon.
