Santos were eliminated after a 2-1 defeat at Novorizontino, with Neymar completing 90 minutes but unable to turn it round. According to Globo.com, goalkeeper Gabriel Brazão was a standout with crucial saves.
Novorizontino went ahead through Rômulo after a misplaced Neymar pass. Santos levelled when Igor Vinícius crossed, Gabriel failed to connect and Gabriel Bontempo swept in. The hosts restored their lead with a second, Luan Peres playing the scorer onside.
Neymar’s long-range distribution was often incisive but he operated far from goal and found the game at a low tempo under tight marking. His mistake in defence proved costly for the opener.
Igor Vinícius contributed well going forward and supplied the cross for the equaliser. Adonis Frías helped break the line in that move, while Willian Arão anchored midfield with positioning and focus.
Luan Peres struggled in key moments and was involved in both concessions. Escobar failed to convince, though he did produce a vital late tackle on Rômulo. Gabriel was isolated and ineffective.
Barreal wasted a clear chance then was withdrawn soon after the interval. Moisés added energy and range of passing but spurned a big opening with a tame finish. Rony worked hard without shining.
Gabriel Menino was repeatedly fouled in a below-par first half and was replaced at the break. Juan Vojvoda’s initial XI omitted Vini Lira and Bontempo, and changes such as withdrawing Gabigol were questioned. The coach bears a good share of responsibility for the exit.
Miguelito entered late and had little influence.
