Watford beat Bristol City 2-1 at Ashton Gate on Friday, climbing from 12th to seventh in the Championship as City slipped to ninth.
Luca Kjerrumgaard struck in the seventh minute, turning in Edo Kayembe's pass from close range. Scott Twine levelled with a header from Adam Randell's set-piece cross (36.). Jeremy Ngakia decided it with a rasping drive from outside the box (77.).
Early on, Egil Selvik tipped over Ross McCrorie's effort and later saved from Tomi Horvat before the break. The goalkeeper then preserved the points in the third minute of second half stoppage time, pushing away Max Bird's header.
After the restart, City introduced fresh legs and pinned the visitors back, but the Hornets' back line stood firm. The visitors also had to replace Saba Goglichidze after a lengthy injury stoppage.
City controlled the ball with 64.6% possession and produced 11 attempts. The Hornets matched the shot count and leaned on their rearguard, making 30 clearances as Selvik finished with three saves.
Next, City visit Port Vale in the FA Cup. The Hornets travel to Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship.
