The week’s round of Ninja A-League fixtures was highlighted by the F3 Derby between Newcastle Jets and Central Coast Mariners.

Elsewhere, with Canberra United not in action this week, Melbourne City had the chance to overtake them at the top. Here’s what happened across the latest round of league results.

Sydney FC 0-0 Adelaide United

Sydney and Adelaide played out a goalless draw at Leichhardt Oval in a game that did little to help either side’s top six push.

The Reds had the first chance of note on the half hour mark, but Emily Condon was denied by a sharp, smothering save from Heather Hinz.

At the other end, Adelaide goalkeeper Ilona Melegh nearly gifted Sydney the lead with a poor pass straight to Jodi Ulkekul. Melegh’s blushes were spared when the Sydney No.9 could only side-foot wide.

The visitors looked the more threatening in the second half. Erin Healy had the ball in the net, but she was penalised for a foul on Willa Pearson in the build-up.

Sydney worked their way back into things and nearly sealed the points ten minutes from time. Riley Tanner drove into the box and smashed the ball off the underside of the bar.

There was still time for Healy to have a header cleared off the line in stoppage time as both sides had to make do with a point. The Sky Blues are now winless in five.

Perth Glory 3-1 Western Sydney Wanderers

Perth Glory made it four wins on the bounce as they comfortably dispatched a hapless Western Sydney.

Holly Caspers thought she had the opener for Wanderers, but was denied by Teresa Morrisey in the Perth goal.

Emma Tovar gave the hosts the lead with a fine strike from the edge of the box on the half hour mark. Susan Phonsongkham’s brilliant free-kick then doubled Perth’s lead on the stroke of half-time.

Western Sydney halved the deficit with 15 minutes left as Yuan Cong tapped home on the line.

Any hopes of a Wanderers revival were extinguished thanks to Ella Lincoln who curled home from the edge of the box with five minutes left.

Wellington Phoenix 1-2 Melbourne City

A quick-fire first half double was enough to see Melbourne City return to the top of the league.

Lara Wall headed wide from Brooke Nunn’s cross early on as the hosts looked to set the tempo.

It was City who took the lead just after the quarter-hour. Danella Butrus drove to the byline and cut the ball back to the top of the box. Leticia McKenna timed her run to perfection to meet the ball and slam City into the lead.

Five minutes later, it was two as Aideen Keane tapped home. Butrus had the initial shot which Victoria Esson looked to have got enough on to keep out. But Keane reacted quickest for a simple finish.

Pia Vlok went close for the Nix with 25 minutes left, but her shot was just about shovelled behind by Malena Mieres. Makala Woods grabbed a debut goal when she beat Mieres to Nunn’s cross, but it wasn’t enough as City went a point clear.

Newcastle Jets 1-2 Central Coast Mariners

A second half comeback from Mariners saw the defending champions move up to third in the league.

Kelli Brown went close for the hosts early on. She latched onto Sophie Hoban’s through ball, but shot wide. It was eventually Brown who put the Jets ahead in first half stoppage time, with a rocket that left Annalee Grove with no chance.

The Mariners equaliser came courtesy of Peta Trimis. She produced a long range spectacular of her own with ten minutes of the second half played.

Trimis turned provider with twenty minutes left as her cross was turned home by Annalise Rasmussen. She somehow contorted her body to poke the ball past Anna Leat for her eighth goal of the season.

The Jets threw everything at the Mariners as they attempted to rescue a point. A corner led to a smart save from Grove, but the ball was only half cleared. The ensuing scramble saw the ball seemingly heading over the line, but for a stunning intervention from Annabel Martin to clear from under her own bar.

Kory Babbington’s side held on for the win and with it, the coveted F3 Derby trophy.

Melbourne Victory 0-1 Brisbane Roar

Melbourne Victory missed the chance to go top of the league as they were beaten by Brisbane Roar.

Bente Jansen tested Courtney Newbon early on, but her shot was too central, allowing the Victory keeper to gather.

Holly Furphy nearly caught Chloe Lincoln out in the Brisbane goal with half an hour gone, but her cross grazed the crossbar.

The Roar scored what turned out to be the winner when Marianna Seidl’s corner was bundled over the line by Daisy Brown.

Lincoln produced a huge save late on to block Kennedy White’s attempt as Brisbane took the points and moved into the top six.
