After looking for an exit all summer, Noah Atubolu is set to extend his contract with SC Freiburg. According to Sky Reporter Florian Plettenberg, the goalkeeper has extended his contract beyond 2027 this week.
However, the extension does not mean that Atubolu will stay at the Europa-Park Stadion much longer. Both Freiburg and Atubolu are still planning for a move with less than a week left in the transfer window.
Atubolu has seemingly been on the way out after a strong season with Freiburg, with the club reaching the Europa League Final. Earlier this summer, Julian Schuster's side signed Mio Backhaus from SV Werder Bremen to prepare for life without Atubolu between the posts.
However, Atubolu has yet to find a strong suitor despite rumored interest from the Premier League and other top European sides. He has recently been linked with Eintracht Frankfurt, but the club would need to find a new solution for goalkeepers Michael Zetterer and Kauã Santos, who both struggled last season.
The contract extension gives Freiburg more options in the market, with a loan with an option or obligation to buy now possible. Atubolu's previous contract was set to expire in the summer of 2027, which would have made a loan impossible, but allowed the goalkeeper to pick his own club next summer.
Freiburg are set to kick off their Bundesliga season on Sunday with Backhaus taking on his former club, Werder Bremen. Schuster's side have already played in the DFB Pokal and UEFA Europa Conference League qualifiers, winning both matches.
