Noah Sadiki expressed pride after playing his part in DR Congo’s historic World Cup finals campaign, which delivered the nation’s first ever knockout tie. According to Sunderland Echo, the Sunderland midfielder called the experience a dream.

The former Union Saint-Gilloise player impressed in his first season on Wearside, producing eye-catching displays as Regis Le Bris’ side emerged as one of the stories of the Premier League. He made 35 appearances in all competitions as Sunderland finished seventh and reached the Europa League league phase alongside AC Milan, Juventus and Olympique Marseille.

His form earned a World Cup call-up with DR Congo in North America. He came off the bench against Portugal and Colombia, then started the 3-1 win over Uzbekistan that sealed a place in the last 32.

Sadiki kept his place for the country’s first ever World Cup knockout tie against England. Brian Cipenga put Congo ahead after seven minutes, but Thomas Tuchel’s side advanced, Harry Kane scoring twice in 11 minutes to book a last-16 meeting with co-hosts Mexico.

"It's a dream. I think every player has this dream as a kid, to play in games like this at the World Cup. I'm gutted that it's finished, but it's life and it's part of the journey. We have to grow from this and be ready for the next one. The win against Uzbekistan was a huge moment in our history. It showed what this team is capable of and gave everyone back home something to be proud of."
