His form earned him a call-up for the finals. He came off the bench against Portugal and Colombia, then started the 3-1 win over Uzbekistan that sealed a place in the last 32.

He kept his spot for his country’s first ever World Cup knockout tie. Brian Cipenga struck after seven minutes, but England advanced 2-1, captain Harry Kane scoring twice in 11 minutes to set up a last-16 meeting with co-hosts Mexico under Thomas Tuchel.

Sadiki admitted he was gutted by the exit yet took pride from the run, calling the Uzbekistan victory a huge moment in their history that showed what the team can do and gave those back home something to celebrate. He said they must grow from it and be ready for the next challenge.
