Norwich City must look into a potential deal for Man United's Harry Amass after his excellent performances on loan at Sheffield Wednesday.

Philippe Clement picked up his first win as Norwich City manager with a convincing 3-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers at Carrow Road on Saturday.

A heavy defeat at Birmingham in his opening game was not the start the Belgian wanted, but the Canaries were much-improved on their own patch against Oxford, who snatched an undeserved late point, and then QPR.

So, there is reason for optimism, but unfortunately for Norwich, several rival teams have also been picking up points recently, which means they remain four points from safety, which is a hugely concerning situation for all connected to the club.

Norwich City must back Philippe Clement in the January window

Therefore, the importance of the January window can’t be understated, as it’s clear Norwich will need reinforcements, and they need to act swiftly to get the players that Clement wants.

Obviously, every transfer is attached with risk, but that’s particularly the case in January when you’re in Norwich’s position, as they require individuals who can hit the ground running.

With that in mind, it would be no surprise if Clement and sporting director Ben Knapper were targeting players with Championship experience to help Norwich in their quest to stay in the division.

Norwich City should push to sign Harry Amass after impressive Sheffield Wednesday spell

One player who fits the bill on that front is Harry Amass, with the 18-year-old currently on loan at Sheffield Wednesday from Manchester United.

The struggles the Owls have had are well-documented, but, despite that, Amass has enhanced his reputation thanks to his performances in a blue-and-white shirt.

The left-back is fearless in the tackle, he is energetic getting up and down the flank, and he has shown real quality both as an out-and-out defender, along with contributing to the attack. Simply put, it’s easy to see why he is so highly-rated at Old Trafford.

So, he would certainly improve Norwich’s XI, as left-back has been a problem position for the team, and he would bring a real balance to that flank.

Any deal wouldn’t be straightforward for multiple reasons, as Amass is loving his time at Hillsborough, and United will be delighted that he is playing week in, week out, which is ideal for his development.

Yet, his deal can be cut short in January, and Norwich must try to muscle in and state their case to the Red Devils that Amass would benefit from a move to Carrow Road.

One obvious reason is that Wednesday are effectively relegated. So, do Man Utd want Amass to be playing for a team that has nothing to play for in the final months of the season?

It would seem beneficial for him to be playing in a more competitive environment, and if Norwich are fighting for their lives, there will be a real edge during the run-in, and these are the sort of games that can really help Amass grow as a player.

Plus, Norwich will undoubtedly be able to put a better financial package on the table than the Owls.

It has been widely reported that United made the deal with Wednesday happen by continuing to pay his wages, and whilst they will prioritise Amass’ footballing needs over finances, if Norwich can offer him first-team football and pay his salary, it would make sense for the Premier League side to accept.

So, even though Wednesday are confident that Amass will stick around, the fact he is not secured for the season means there is a window of opportunity for other clubs to step in.

With Norwich’s issues at left-back, and Amass’ ability to go straight into the team, this feels like a no-brainer for the Canaries, and it’s the sort of signing that Clement must push for as he looks to keep the team in the Championship.
