A decision has been made in FC Bayern’s central defense. A name that has been repeatedly traded recently no longer plays a role in the current plans. The Munich club is removing a coveted talent from its list.
As BILD head of soccer Christian Falk reports, those responsible now see Luka Vuskovic outside their financial framework. Following the officially announced contract extension with Dayot Upamecano, the priorities are clearly distributed and an additional transfer worth millions for the center of defence is not considered feasible.
In addition to the financial aspects, the sporting perspective also plays a decisive role. With Jonathan Tah and Upamecano, the record champions have two established regulars in the center of defence, plus Minjae Kim and Hiroki Ito as further options. Under these conditions, it would be difficult for an 18-year-old like Vuskovic to get regular match practice – a factor that is considered particularly important for his development.

It was previously reported that Bayern were looking closely at the Croatian talent. However, sporting director Max Eberl had already emphasized before the announcement of Upamecano’s extension: „First of all, we have to sort out our ‚internal transfers‘ [Vertragsverlängerungen]. Once that is done, we will have a top-class defence.“
At the same time, he clarified: „That does not mean that Vuskovic is not a good player. He is 18, is playing an outstanding season at HSV and belongs to Tottenham.“
With regard to the competitive situation in his own squad, Eberl also explained: „But FC Bayern also have very good central defenders in Jonathan Tah, Upa and Minjae – and we also have Ito and Stani, who can play there.“
According to Falk, Vuskovic will no longer be a concrete topic at FC Bayern in January 2026.
