‘Not Very Big’ Verdict Given On Club Signing West Ham Star | OneFootball

West Ham United midfielder Edson Alvarez looks unlikely to return to former club Ajax this summer, with the chances of a move ‘not very big’.

The Hammers landed Alvarez when he left Ajax for the club in 2023, signing a five-year contract in a deal worth around £35m.

The Mexican midfielder has since made more than 70 appearances for the Hammers but spent the entirety of last season on loan at Fenerbahce after struggling for the regular minutes he wanted in east London.

His spell in Turkey did little to change his fortunes, with a succession of injuries limiting him to just 18 appearances, while he managed only one assist and failed to make a major impression.

Now back in London with two years remaining on his contract, it is widely expected that his future does not lie with the Championship side.

Bundesliga outfit 1.FC Koln showed interest in the 28-year-old but failed to make significant progress due to the financial demands involved, while Real Sociedad are also eyeing a late move for the West Ham midfielder.

Another potential route for the Mexico international was a return to the Netherlands with former club Ajax, although that door now appears to be closing.

According to Dutch journalist Johan Inan, speaking on the Algemeen Dagbladl podcast (via Voetbal Nieuws), the chance of the Mexican midfielder making a comeback in Amsterdam is ‘not very big’.

It appears, however, that La Liga could be the most likely destination for the 28-year-old this summer, although it remains to be seen if and when a deal materialises with just weeks remaining in the transfer window.

Alvarez did start in the EFL Cup against Portsmouth on Sunday under Nuno Espirito Santo, playing 75 minutes in the 3-1 victory.

It remains to be seen whether the Portuguese boss sees a role for him this season and whether that could convince the midfielder to stay at West Ham.

However, with only Championship football on the cards at the London Stadium, the 103-capped Mexico international is likely to jump ship should the right deal for his signature come in.
