Habib Diarra joked on social media after his opener was ruled an own goal in Monday night’s 3-0 win over Burnley.
Sunderland Echo reports that Sunderland’s players posted afterwards to thank fans and reflect rising belief after another commanding display at the Stadium of Light.
The midfielder captioned match images “Nothing happened”, a nod to his shot being credited to Axel Tuanzebe via a deflection. He then struck again before the break, his first official Sunderland goal, on only his fourth start after injury and AFCON.
Captain Trai Hume shared a pre-match walkout photo, calling it a proud moment and saying they would keep building. Nordi Mukiele described it as a big home win and job done. Reinildo Mandava highlighted three points, an assist and a clean sheet, and vowed to keep fighting.
Régis Le Bris praised Diarra on his return to the starting line-up, saying the 20-year-old embodied the summer recruitment plan. He said the club supported him through injury and AFCON, adding that Diarra brings energy, wants to press and score. He noted Diarra was among the first signings and set the tone, even though he joined the group later.
Diarra linked well with Brian Brobbey, whose influence grew despite not finding the net. Le Bris said the striker is improving, provides a direct outlet when pressed man for man, and could have scored once or twice, but his work-rate stood out.
