Nottingham Forest open the window with two senior goalkeepers and a plan to climb the Premier League while avoiding another fight, after last season’s Europa League semi-final.
According to Nottingham Post, the retained list confirmed Stefan Ortega and Angus Gunn will leave as free agents when their deals expire this month. Gunn played once, the second half of the 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace in February, and later felt game-time plans had shifted as he pushed to depart mid-season.
Ortega made 10 appearances and impressed as first choice in Europe, though soon after joining he said he would have liked to return to Germany. That leaves Matz Sels and John Victor as the senior options.
Sels is No.1. John had a brief run under Sean Dyche before a mistake and a season-ending injury at Aston Villa in January halted him, and earlier outings had not fully convinced. There has been talk of interest back in Brazil, with Cruzeiro linked.
Sels has 12 months left on his contract and, while there have been whispers around him, there is no suggestion of concrete interest. Forest would not want to lose him now after his late-season form.
The question is whether John offers adequate back-up or if the department is reshaped. Forest could add experience to push Sels or recruit a younger successor, in line with recent policy. Rumours are sparse, though Rangers’ Jack Butland has been tentatively linked with suggestions he could cost less than £1 million, and supporters have floated Brice Samba and Manchester City’s James Trafford, who could attract Newcastle United.
