Nottingham Forest have sold Taiwo Awoniyi to Premier League rivals Coventry City, the striker completing a move across the Midlands for the Sky Blues.

CoventryLive reports the fee is around £7 million, and the 29-year-old becomes Coventry’s sixth signing of the summer.

Awoniyi joined Forest from Union Berlin in June 2022 and departs with 23 goals and six assists from 103 appearances.

He was pivotal in 2022/23, scoring six times in the final four matches as Forest preserved their Premier League status.

The resurgence of Chris Wood and Awoniyi’s fitness issues, including a serious abdominal injury, limited him to just six Premier League starts across the last two seasons. He still played a part in another successful relegation battle last term.

He said his goodbyes during Sunday’s 2-0 pre-season win over Brest, when his former team-mates formed a guard of honour.

His exit leaves Wood as the undisputed first-choice target man, with Igor Jesus ready to build on a first season in English football. Oliver Glasner could look to add options in the final fortnight of the transfer window.
