Nottingham Forest have terminated Edu’s contract, drawing a line under a turbulent spell that dragged the club into a relegation battle and constant managerial churn.

The 48-year-old leaves a little over a year after arriving as global head of football, The Athletic reports. He had been sidelined for months, not attending a match since February or visiting the City Ground or training base since early March.

Forest do not plan to appoint a direct replacement or formally announce the exit, with chief football officer George Syrianos already taking on wider duties. His expanded role has helped plug the gap left by Ross Wilson’s move to Newcastle in October last year.

Edu’s position came under intense scrutiny during a chaotic campaign. Having pushed for a Champions League place under Nuno Espirito Santo, Forest slipped into a survival fight after a fall-out between manager and director precipitated Nuno’s departure.

Ange Postecoglou then lasted just 39 days before giving way to Sean Dyche, who was dismissed in February. Vitor Pereira’s brief stint preceded the arrival of former Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, as the club searched for stability.

Recruitment under Edu also drew heavy criticism, with big-money additions such as Omari Hutchinson, Douglas Luiz and Oleksandr Zinchenko failing to make a meaningful impact.

It contrasts with his earlier reputation at Arsenal, where he became the club’s first technical director in 2019 and appointed Mikel Arteta later that year. He was promoted to sporting director in November 2022 and resigned in November 2024.
