A high-stakes European finale arrives at the City Ground this Thursday evening as Nottingham Forest host Hungarian champions Ferencváros in their final Europa League league-phase fixture.
While Sean Dyche’s side is already guaranteed a place in the knockout round play-offs, they must secure a victory to keep their slim hopes of an automatic top-eight finish alive. The Tricky Trees return to home soil looking to bounce back from a bizarre 1–0 defeat to Braga.
Standing in their way is a Ferencváros side led by Robbie Keane, which remains one of only three unbeaten teams in the competition this season. Currently sitting seventh, the “Green Eagles” know that a win in Nottingham will officially punch their ticket directly to the Round of 16.
The hosts will be without midfielder Elliot Anderson, who is suspended following his red card in Portugal. Chris Wood and John Victor remain sidelined with knee injuries. Omari Hutchinson, Taiwo Awoniyi, and Jair Cunha are also ineligible for this phase of the competition. Additionally, Douglas Luiz is unavailable as he reportedly nears a return to Aston Villa. Ryan Yates is expected to step into the midfield alongside Ibrahim Sangaré.
Robbie Keane is missing defender Stefan Gartenmann through injury, while Toon Raemaekers is suspended due to an accumulation of yellow cards. The visitors must also adapt to the recent departure of star forward Barnabás Varga, who joined AEK Athens earlier this month. Bamidele Yusuf and Kristoffer Zachariassen are likely to lead the line. The Hungarian side aims to protect their seven-match unbeaten streak.
Forest have won their last two home Europa League matches by an aggregate score of 5–0. Notably, the team has applied the most high pressures in the Premier League this year. Despite sitting 14th, Forest have faced the fewest shots and have the lowest Expected Goals Against (xGA) of any team in the Europa League this season. They recently secured a 2–0 Premier League win at Brentford to build momentum.
Ferencváros are unbeaten in seven European matches this season. If they avoid defeat on Thursday, they will equal their longest-ever unbeaten run in major European competition. Historically, the Hungarian side has struggled on English soil. They have lost six of their nine away major European matches in the country. However, they have been brilliant on the road this term, picking up seven points in three games.
Nottingham Forest Predicted XI: Sels; Savona, Milenkovic, Morato, Williams; Yates, Sangare; Ndoye, Gibbs-White, Hudson-Odoi; Jesus
