There is always one game that New York City FC fans circle on their calendar, and that is the Hudson River Derby. Whether they are attending the match in person, going out to watch with fellow fans, or watching at home, this is one fixture that nobody wants to miss. Every meeting with the New York Red Bulls is a big affair, and often entertaining and crazy.
So, when NYCFC meets their rival this weekend, they will be aiming to secure all three points. The last time the two met was in the U.S. Open Cup a few weeks ago, and the defensive players put on a show in the 3-1 win. All of the goals were scored by defensive players, so it was an insane way to win, especially in a derby match.
Alas, the Pigeons and Red Bulls have won their last two matches in Major League Soccer. But at this time, the weekend matchup will be a little more dangerous for the Boys in Blue. They recently won against Charlotte FC, but the attack, despite performing well in the buildup, was awful in front of the goal. They only had four shots, with one on target. Thankfully, the one on target led to the goal.
On the other side, the red team had a great offensive game on Wednesday, winning 3-2 against the Columbus Crew with 13 shots and six on target. Therefore, the Bronx side must be better in the attack. So, here is a preview of the Hudson River Derby between NYCFC and RBNY.
NYCFC and the Red Bulls will face each other on Saturday, May 16.
The game will begin at 7:30 PM.
The match will be at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey.
This meeting can be seen on Apple TV.
It will be a warm but beautiful evening when the Hudson River Derby kicks off. It will be about 79 degrees. Low humidity at about 30%, and winds of about 13 mph, will make it comfortable at Sports Illustrated Stadium. With partly cloudy skies, there is no chance of rain as of now.
There is no change to the injury report. Drew Baiera (leg), Talles Magno (leg), Alonso Martínez (leg), Max Murray (leg), Aiden O’Neill (leg), and Kevin O’Toole (leg) will miss the derby.
NYCFC fans should watch Nicolás Fernández Mercau. The Argentine scored a fantastic goal against Charlotte and had an assist in the win over the Columbus Crew, all in the last week. He could be the difference maker in the derby, and he is arguably always a threat.
Fans should also watch Julian Hall on RBNY. The 18-year-old had a hat-trick during the midweek game and already has nine goals. He is a star in the making and easily could cause problems for the boys in Blue.
Both teams will expect to win in the Hudson River Derby, but based on their recent form, they will be disappointed. NYCFC and RBNY will draw 2-2, sharing the points in what will be an exciting battle.
