NYCFC vs Vancouver Whitecaps FC preview: An extremely tall mountain to climb

Article image:NYCFC vs Vancouver Whitecaps FC preview: An extremely tall mountain to climb

The last time New York City FC faced Vancouver Whitecaps FC was in 2023.  Since then, half of the Starting XI is no longer with the team, the Pigeons had their worst season since their inaugural campaign, Maxi Moralez had recently returned after originally leaving the club, Matt Freese just secured the starting goalkeeper role, and Nick Cushing was the most disliked man by City fans.

The 1-1 draw was a memorable one, for not only was it a disappointing draw like the team’s recent one against St. Louis City SC, but it was also the match where Moralez tore his ACL.  Hence, for those who are superstitious, it might be a good idea to rest the midfielder this weekend in the three-game week.  Nobody wants another player to rupture their ACL, either, after Drew Baiera did while out on international duty.  Nevertheless, it is vital that Pascal Jansen plays his best players, for the team does not want to be winless in their last three matches.  Additionally, the Whitecaps are a top side in Major League Soccer again this year.

Despite a better history, NYCFC will have a mountain to climb while in Vancouver, and no, it is not any of the North Shore Mountains.  Rather, their opponent will be extremely difficult to beat, and the Pigeons cannot afford to make the mistakes they have made against Inter Miami CF and St. Louis City, when they gave up that late goal.

So, will the Bronx side reverse their current trend?  Or return to the solid start that they had in their first four matches of the season?  Here is a preview of the game between NYCFC and the Vancouver Whitecaps.

NYCFC vs Vancouver Whitecaps preview

Date

NYCFC and Vancouver will play for the first time since 2023 on Saturday, April 11.

Time

The fixture will begin at 7:30 PM ET.

Location

The game will take place at BC Place in Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada.

How to watch

Supporters can catch the meeting on Apple TV.

Weather

It will not be the nicest day in Vancouver.  At the start of the match, it will be 54 degrees with showers.  The good news is that BC Place has a retractable roof, and based on the weather, it should be closed to keep everyone dry.

Injury report

Drew Baiera (leg), Máximo Carrizo (leg), Alonso Martínez (leg), Max Murray (leg), and Andrés Perea (leg) are all out injured for the game. Thiago Martins (leg) is questionable.

Players to watch

NYCFC fans should watch Tayvon Gray.  The right-back struggled going forward offensively against St. Louis, and was not at his best.  The Boys in Blue will need him to play at a top level.  More importantly, with him being the only true right-back that can play after Baiera’s injury, he must be at his best all the time.

Fans should also watch Thomas Müller on Vancouver.  The German legend might be 36, but he still plays at a high level.  He has already scored three goals this season and is always an attacking threat.  His knowledge of the beautiful game allows him to be smart with his choices in the final third and create space for himself and his teammates.

It is difficult to be positive since the Whitecaps are as good as they are.  Yes, there is always a chance the Boys in Blue could at least pick up a point.  However, in this case, especially since the visitors are known for good and bad streaks, NYCFC will lose 3-1.  Talles Magno will score the lone goal off the bench, unless the team is awarded a penalty kick.  In that case, Moralez will score for the Pigeons.
