“Player Frenkie de Jong has suffered a minor injury to the external obturator muscle of his right leg. His recovery will determine his availability,” the statement read.

De Jong sustained the injury while in action for the Netherlands national team last week against Poland.

The midfielder played 83 minutes against Robert Lewandowski’s team before being taken off with discomfort in his glutes. Soon after, the Dutch national team announced that the 28-year-old was released from the squad for their game against Lithuania due to the injury.

Having returned to Barça over the weekend, De Jong underwent tests at the club facilities today and it has now been confirmed that his injury is a minor one, although the statement does not reveal the length of his absence.

Despite the issue being not serious, it is expected that the midfielder will sit out of Barcelona’s upcoming La Liga game against Valencia, keeping in mind the UEFA Champions League opener against Newcastle United next week.
