Fiorentina have confirmed that 39-year-old striker Edin Dzeko has left to join 2. Bundesliga side Schalke on a permanent deal. The club said in a statement that his contract was ended by mutual consent.
Dzeko joined Fiorentina on a free in the summer after his Fenerbahce deal expired, signing a one-year contract with an option for a further 12 months.
The move takes him back to Germany for the first time in 15 years. He will be asked to aid Schalke’s push for promotion from the second tier.
Schalke are top of the 2. Bundesliga, four points clear of SV Elversberg with 16 games remaining.
The Bosnia and Herzegovina forward made 18 appearances for Fiorentina in all competitions. 11 were in Serie A, nine as a substitute. He also played five times in the Conference League and became the oldest scorer in the competition’s history by netting against Rapid Vienna in October.
He turns 40 in March and is highly unlikely to return to Serie A before retiring. He has previously represented Roma, Inter and Fiorentina in Italy.
