Schalke 04 have signed striker Edin Džeko on a deal to the end of the season, the club confirmed. He arrives from Fiorentina to boost their 2. Bundesliga campaign.
At 39, he brings top-level pedigree. Director of professional football Youri Mulder said the club are adding a proven target man and goalscorer, highlighting his leadership and appetite for the challenge ahead.
Mulder added that Džeko’s enthusiasm for the move was clear from the first contact, and that Schalke are keen to see that hunger in the run-in.
Džeko knows German football well after four seasons with VfL Wolfsburg, where he won the Bundesliga title. Before committing, he spoke with compatriot Nikola Katić, who joined Schalke in the summer.
The forward said he studied Schalke closely once interest emerged, and that talks with the club and head coach Miron Muslic, as well as Katić, were very positive.
He praised the team’s development after difficult years and said he wants to give everything to help in the second half of the campaign. Džeko added he is looking forward to a first home outing at a sold-out VELTINS-Arena.
