Girondins de Bordeaux, who back in 2024 were administratively relegated to the fourth tier of French football, have now been excluded from participating in the National Championships, it was confirmed by the FFF on Wednesday. At best, the club will participate in R1, the sixth tier of French football, next season.
In financial difficulties for several years, it has been a dramatic decline for Les Girondins. It was only as recently as 2019 that the club were in the UEFA Europa League. The club suffered relegation to Ligue 2 back in 2022 and failed to return to the top-flight.
Bordeaux then suffered an administrative relegation to the fourth tier two seasons later. In their two seasons in the Championnat National 2, they have failed to earn promotion, all the while, the club continued to pay for the financial mismanagement under their current ownership.
Earlier in the summer, the DNCG – French football’s financial watchdog – took the decision to exclude the club from the National Championships. The Appeals Commission has now ratified that decision after Sparta Capital failed to raise the €10m necessary for next season. Attempts to find a buyer for the former giants of French football also failed.
At best, Bordeaux will now participate in the R1, the sixth tier, next season. However, a meeting will soon take place with the commercial court, who could hand a verdict of compulsory liquidation between now and the end of the month.
