SC Karlsruhe have announced that Lars Stindl will join the club at the end of the season when his Borussia Mönchengladbach contract expires.

On rejoining his boyhood club, Stindl said: “I am very happy to come back home with my family and play again for the KSC after my time at Borussia Mönchengladbach, the club where it all began!” Coach of Karlsruhe, Christian Eichner added: “With Lars Stindl, we sign an excellent footballer who has shown his class for years in the Bundesliga and also on an international level. We get a player who is versatile on the offensive and will help us enormously with his class. As head coach, it’s great to have such a player in the squad in the future.”

Karlsruhe managing director Michael Becker commented on the signing of the 34-year-old: “The commitment of Lars Stindl shows that we are fully operationally able to act within the framework of the recently established Taskforce Sport. We would especially like to thank Lars for the financial cooperation. Without this, a commitment within the framework of our planned cadre structure would not have been possible. With his person, we win an extraordinary player as well as another great identification figure. Together with him, we are already looking forward to the new season in the then completed BBBank Wildpark.”

The 34-year-old has signed a one-year contract at the club having announced he would leave Gladbach earlier this month. Whether Stindl will continue his career after 2024 is currently unknown. The perfect end for Stindl’s career would be if he was able to lead Karlsruhe to promotion next season.

Stindl left Karlsruhe in 2010 on a free transfer to join Hannover 96. The 34-year-old returns home having played in the Champions League, capped for Germany and helping them win the Confederations Cup as well as having a 13-year Bundesliga career.

In his final season, Stindl has scored six and assisted nine in 26 games as Gladbach currently sits midtable in the Bundesliga. While his new club are currently ninth in the 2.Bundesliga.
