Lazio midfielder Nicolo Rovella went under the knife on Monday afternoon after fracturing his collarbone in Sardinia.
The 24-year-old had already missed almost four months of action due to a groin issue that plagued his first half of the season, and eventually forced him to undergo surgery. On Saturday, the Italian made his first Serie A start since September, but what began as a joyous occasion for the player ended in agonizing fashion.
In the second half, Rovella was fouled by Cagliari right-back Ze Pedro, and his awkward fall left him with a fractured collarbone. Following his return to Rome, clinical tests detected a severe injury that could only be treated through surgery. The official Lazio website confirmed that the operation was successfully conducted on Monday.
S.S. Lazio have announced that Nicolò Rovella underwent surgery this afternoon for the reduction and internal fixation of a fracture to his right clavicle, sustained during the match played in Cagliari. The operation was a complete success. The midfielder will begin a specific rehabilitation programme in the coming days, under the constant supervision of the club’s medical staff.
While the official statement didn’t provide an estimated timetable for the player’s recovery, earlier reports expected Rovella to be out between 60 and 90 days. And taking into account the period required for athletic rehabilitation, many believe that the Genoa youth product is unlikely to offer a prominent contribution for the rest of the campaign.
