RB Leipzig have this afternoon confirmed the signing of 24-year-old midfielder Xaver Schlager from Wolfsburg for a reported €12 million. The Austria international has signed a four-year contract until 2026.
Schlager was entering the final year of his contract at Wolfsburg and had a reported exit clause exceeding €50m but with a contract extension unlikely despite negotiations, Wolfsburg were forced to sell rather than risk losing the central-midfielder on a free transfer in 2023.
Despite originally reported as a replacement for Konrad Laimer, this isn’t the case. But it comes after speculation that one of Tyler Adams or Amadou Haidara could leave the Bundesliga club this summer.
Schlager is RB Leipzig’s first signing this summer under Domenico Tedesco for a transfer fee after Janis Blaswich joined the club on a free transfer.
The Austria international played 81 games in all competitions for Wolfsburg since his move from RB Salzburg for €15m in 2019. Although missing much of last season through injury, Schlager played 14 Bundesliga games.
