AS Saint-Étienne have confirmed that they have activated the purchase clause for Maxime Bernauer (26), with the defender signing a contract that will keep him at the club until 2027.

Bernauer joined Saint-Étienne on loan from GNK Dinamo Zagreb in the winter transfer window on a six-month deal. During his stay in Croatia, the right-back made 43 appearances, some of which came in the Champions League.

Bernauer returned to his home country to try and help Saint-Étienne maintain their position in Ligue 1 after they had won promotion via the playoffs back to the top flight during the previous season. However, Les Verts were unable to beat the drop and were relegated back down to Ligue 2.

Saint-Étienne will be hopeful that Bernauer’s previous experience in Ligue 2 will help them bounce immediately back, as before joining Zagreb in 2023, Bernauer had spent two seasons in the second division with Paris FC.
