Schalke have announced that they have completed the permanent signing of Edin Dzeko from Fiorentina.
The Bosnian joins the 2.Bundesliga side on a short-term deal until the end of the season, and this contract will be performance-based, reports kicker, meaning goals and most importantly, if Schalke get promoted.
There is no clause in the contract to extend it beyond the summer.
On joining Schalke, the club’s new number 10 said:
“Since the initial interest, I have been very intensively involved with Schalke and watched several games. The talks with the management, Miron Muslic as coach and of course Nikola Katic, were very good” “It’s very impressive how the team has developed this season after difficult years. I want to give everything now so that we are also successful as a team in the second half of the season. I’m really looking forward to the first home game in the sold-out VELTINS Arena.”
Dzeko is said to have been the one to approach Schalke over a potential move three weeks ago, and despite interest from Paris FC, he opted to move to Gelsenkirchen due to the size of the club as well as thanks to the convincing of head coach Miron Muslic and defender Nikola Katic, both Bosnian and the latter being an international teammate of Dzeko.
Schalke are currently first in the 2.Bundesliga and have reached this point thanks to strong defensive discipline, and has seen them only concede 10 goals this season. However, in attack, they have only scored 22 goals and lack attacking quality behind captain Kenan Karaman and striker Moussa Syla.
It is hoped that Dzeko’s arrival will provide a boost for die Königsblau’s attack in the second half of the season as they look to return to the Bundesliga.
Dzeko obviously has a pedigree in Germany, having made his name at Wolfsburg, scoring 85 goals in 142 games as he helped them lift their only Bundesliga title in 2009.
