Union Saint-Gilloise have announced that they have completed the signing of a striker from the fourth tier of German football.

Mateo Biondic has moved to the Belgian side from Eintracht Trier for €220k. The side from Rhineland Palatinate currently plays in the Regionalliga Südwest, one of the divisions in the fourth tier of German football, which is split into regions.

In 17 games this season, Biondic has seven goals and five assists with Trier currently sitting 11th in the 18-team league.

Biondic’s move to USG now means there is a possibility that he could feature in the Champions League this season, if the Brussels side qualifies for the playoff round.

Union Saint-Gilloise’s previous history with the German lower divisions:

Union Saint-Gilloise have been known to scout players from different areas compared to other clubs, and over the years, one of those has been the lower tiers of German football.

The most notable signing was that of Deniz Undav. At the time, Undav was playing for third-tier Meppen before he moved to USG on a free transfer, who were then in the second division of Belgian football. Undav not only fired them to promotion, but to within touching distance of the title in their first season back in the top flight before moving to Brighton.

Undav has since moved back to Germany with Stuttgart and played his way into the German national team

Other players are Gustaf Nilsson, who was signed from Wehen Wiesbaden for €1m before being sold to Club Brugge for €6.5m while Dennis Eckert Ayensa joined from Ingolstadt on a free transfer and was then sold to Standard Liege for €1m.
