Cologne have officially completed the signing of Croatian international Borna Sosa from Crystal Palace. The 28-year-old left-back joins the cathedral city side on loan through the end of the 2026/27 campaign. No purchase option is reportedly included in the agreement. The deal concludes a deadline-day pursuit that accelerated considerably over the past 48 hours.

The defender reached a verbal agreement with Köln before the two clubs completed the remaining negotiations ahead of the deadline. Sosa joins fellow 28-year-old Gideon Mensah as another natural option on the left side and provides Cologne with considerable Bundesliga experience.

Sosa returns to where he played his best football

The Bundesliga remains the competition most closely associated with the strongest period of Sosa’s club career. Sosa played for Stuttgart for five seasons between 2018 and 2023. At one point near the end of the 2020/21 Bundesliga campaign, Sosa even emerged as a potential German national team option after obtaining German citizenship.

Stuttgart signed the Zagreb native from Dinamo Zagreb in 2018. Following relegation during his first season, Sosa helped the Swabians immediately return to the top flight and subsequently established himself as one of the Bundesliga’s most productive attacking wing-backs.

His exceptional left foot became his defining feature. Sosa supplied 35 assists and scored five goals across 115 competitive appearances for Stuttgart, repeatedly creating chances with early deliveries and crosses from advanced positions on the left.

His performances also earned him regular international recognition with Croatia and helped establish a market value that peaked at €23m. Sosa eventually left Stuttgart for Ajax in September 2023 in a deal worth approximately €8m.

What followed proved considerably less successful. The Croatian spent only one season in Amsterdam before moving to Torino on loan for the 2024/25 campaign. The Serie A side declined to exercise its purchase option, leaving Sosa to return briefly to Ajax before Crystal Palace acquired him for approximately €2.3m last summer.

Regular football again proved difficult to secure in England.

Cologne have finally supplied the route back.

Cologne add experience and attacking quality on the left

Sosa’s arrival gives Kwasniok a stylistically different option to Mensah. The former Stuttgart wing-back remains most comfortable when permitted to advance aggressively down the left, and his crossing quality gives Cologne another means of creating chances from wide areas. The transfer also brings considerably more experience to a Cologne squad seeking to consolidate its Bundesliga status after last season’s 14th-place finish.

Sosa arrives having played Bundesliga, Eredivisie, Serie A, Premier League and European football, while also representing Croatia extensively at international level.

His first possible Bundesliga appearance back in Germany carries an additional twist.

Cologne travel to Stuttgart on Matchday 2.

“I know Cologne from my time in Stuttgart,” Sosa himself added. “I still remember the away games very well because Cologne has one of the best atmospheres in the Bundesliga. Now I’m looking forward to experiencing that feeling as an FC player and playing here in the stadium. I’ve obviously followed how FC have started because I still follow the Bundesliga.”
