Borussia Mönchengladbach have officially recalled goalkeeper Jan Olschowsky back from Alemannia Aachen. Aachen, meanwhile have brought in former VfL Bochum mainstay Manuel Riemann to replace Olschowsky. Both clubs were able to quickly finalize transactions related to Jonas Omlin’s loan out to Bayer Leverkusen earlier today.
Gladbach’s decision earlier this year to loan their one-time presumed “goalkeeper of the future” this summer has worked well for all parties involved. The now 24-year-old keeper kept warm over the course of 20 3. Liga starts this season. Though he only officially kept two clean sheets, Olschowsky often performed decently in his Aachen appearances.
Olschowsky still has four Bundesliga appearances to his credit. If (as has been rumored) current BMG No. 1 Moritz Nicolas departs this summer, Olschowsky finds himself well-poised to compete with young Luxembourg International Tiago Pereira Cardoso for the starting role.
The long-time VfL Bochum No.1 famously found himself left out of the Bochum squad ahead of the team’s participation in the 2023/24 promotion-relegation playoff. After seven turbulent months during which Riemann filed several labor complaints in local Westphalian courts, Bochum finally terminated Riemann’s contract last January in order to allow the Bundesliga veteran to sign with Paderborn.
Riemann ended up making 13 2. Bundesliga appearances last spring for Paderborn before being released this past summer. The now 37-year-old has been without a club since. Riemann’s new contract with Aachen also only runs until the end of the season.
“Jan, who was trained by us, now has another chance to prove himself on the goalkeeping team of his home club,” Gladbach sporting director Rouven Schröder noted in a club statement. “The loan to Aachen went well.“
“It feels like coming home,” Olschowsky added. “The time in Aachen was very important for my development. Now I want to do my part to contribute to Borussia’s success.“
“With Manuel Riemann, we are gaining a very experienced goalkeeper for our goalkeeping team,” Alemannia sporting director Rachid Azzouzi said of his new addition. “He knows all three German professional leagues from his own experience and brings exactly the calm and stability we need in the second half of the season.”
“I very much looking forward to playing for Alemannia from this point forward,” Riemann himself said. “The club stands for tradition and passion. I can’t wait to get to know my teammates and work with them towards a successful second half of the season.“
