SC Freiburg have officially confirmed another contract extension for club record-holder Vincenzo Grifo. As usual, the Breisgau club did not disclose the precise length of the new agreement. For Grifo, another agreement continues a relationship that has long since moved beyond that of a conventional senior player.

The Italian international has accumulated 360 competitive appearances for Freiburg, placing him fourth on the club’s all-time list. His 108 goals and 98 assists are both club records. Those marks have fallen in relatively quick succession. Grifo surpassed Nils Petersen as Freiburg’s record Bundesliga goalscorer. He then drew level with Petersen’s all-competitions scoring record in March before breaking it during a memorable Europa League victory over Genk.

Despite having already secured his place in club history, Grifo insists that his ambitions remain intact.

“The journey isn’t over yet and I’ve still set myself a few goals,” Grifo said following confirmation of the extension. “I’m still very ambitious and want to be on the pitch in every game. The competition from the younger lads motivates me and makes all of us better.”

Sporting director Klemens Hartenbach emphasized that Grifo’s value extends well beyond his production on the pitch.

“Working with Vince is something special,” Hartenbach said. “With his consistently strong sporting performances and his role as someone others can turn to, he is incredibly important for the entire group.”
