Jürgen Klopp could name a 40-man squad on Thursday for his first four games in charge of the Germany national team. SC Freiburg’s fullback Philipp Treu will most likely be among the players set to receive their first call-ups.
“We had a FaceTime call,” Treu told Sky/RTL that Klopp contacted him ahead of Thursday’s press conference. “He introduced himself and wanted to get to know me better. It was a cool conversation to get an impression of what his ideas and plans are.”
"It was a positive conversation. Whether it will be enough on Thursday, we will see," the 25-year-old concluded. The former Germany U19 international could benefit from a potential Klopp decision to deploy Joshua Kimmich as a midfielder.
While he predominantly plays right-back in Freiburg, the former St. Pauli man has also played several times on the left flank. Freiburg started the season with six wins in all competitions. Treu continued his good form after helping them reach the Europa League final at the end of last campaign.
Germany will face the Netherlands, Greece (home and away) and Serbia in the space of ten days from September 24th to October 4th. Klopp is planning to use two different squads for the extended start of the UEFA Nations League.
