Philipp Treu is expected to be in Jürgen Klopp’s extended Germany squad for the first international break of the season. Klopp could name a 40-man list on Thursday for his opening four matches and the Freiburg full-back is likely to be among the first-time call-ups.
"We had a FaceTime call," said Treu. "He introduced himself and wanted to get to know me better. It was a cool conversation to get an impression of what his ideas and plans are." He was speaking to Sky/RTL.
"It was a positive conversation. Whether it will be enough on Thursday, we will see," the 25-year-old concluded.
The former Germany U19 international could benefit if Klopp chooses to deploy Joshua Kimmich as a midfielder. While primarily a right-back at Freiburg, the former St. Pauli man has also featured on the left.
Freiburg have opened the season with six wins in all competitions. Treu has maintained the form that helped them reach the Europa League final at the end of last campaign.
Germany face the Netherlands, Greece home and away, and Serbia between September 24th and October 4th. Klopp is planning to use two different squads for the extended start to the UEFA Nations League.
