The German women’s national team’s Nations League Final against Spain may have ended in an unsatisfying 0-3 loss on aggregate, but German women’s footballing enthusiasts have something big to celebrate just one day later. On Wednesday evening, the UEFA executive committee opted to award Germany hosting rights UEFA Women’s EURO 2029.

The German Bundesrepublik – which has not hosted a major women’s tournament since the 2011 Women’s World Cup – will host its first women’s Euros (and third overall) since 2001. Germany (then still West Germany) also hosted the 1989 tournament on home soil and won. The German women themselves will be seeking to capture their first European Championship since 2013.

Prior to 2017, the German women were the undisputed “Queens of Europe”, having captured six consecutive continental crowns. This streak was broken by the hosting Dutch in 2017. The English women then defeated the Germans on their home turf in the 2022 Final at Wembley. England also won the 2026 women’s Euro in Switzerland.

The eight hosting venues will be Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hanover, Köln, Leipzig, Munich, and Wolfsburg. Just like in past three editions, the women’s Euro will remain a 16-nation tournament comprised of 31 fixtures with no third-place playoff.

Germany lobbied heavily for the right to host the tournament. Many watching Bundesliga matches in recent weeks will have surely noticed some of the signs in the stands and the #TogetherWeRise placards sported by German football officials.

We are proud and happy to be able to host the UEFA Women’s EURO 2029,” DFB President Neuendorf noted in an initial statement released by the German FA. “We would like to thank UEFA for the trust they have placed in us. Hosting such an important tournament is an honor.

After the wonderful UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 in Switzerland, we want to set new standards,” Neuendorf continued. “We believe the tournament in Germany will attract more than one million fans and that UEFA will make a financial profit for the first time with a Women’s European Championship.”

From this point forward until the summer of 2029, we will be channeling all our energy into hosting a European Championship that UEFA and the entire European football family can be proud of,” DFB Vice President for Women’s and Girls’ Football Heike Ullrich added in her own statement. “We look forward to the positive effects the tournament will have on the development of women’s football in Europe.

UEFA has formulated clear goals for 2030,” Ullirch continued, “And we want to contribute to this with the UEFA Women’s EURO 2029. Above all, we want to promote the exchange of knowledge around this tournament.
