Marseille’s management decision to sign a 36-year-old player coming off a season in a lesser league was questioned by many. However, the Gabon international has shut down all doubters in record time. On Tuesday night in the Champions League, he proved he still has what it takes to compete at the highest level in Europe. Wearing the captain’s armband, he scored a goal and provided two assists in OM’s commanding 4-0 victory. Auba was even named Man of the Match by UEFA.

After the match, the former Arsenal forward posted a story on his social networks, sending a message to some of his detractors. Filming his Man of the Match trophy, he added the following comment: “My son told me, ‘bring it home,’ so I did! 36 years old, they said! We don’t care, we’ll play until 50, is that good? Set your own goals, not theirs!”
