Opta's supercomputer has given a prediction for the final 2026/27 League One table

The League One season will get underway this weekend with a trio of 12.30pm kick-offs at Notts County, Oxford United and Reading.

The trio will host Leicester City, MK Dons and Luton Town, respectively, and they will be among the sides hoping to compete for promotion in 2026/27.

The third tier is set to be fiercely competitive, with clubs like Sheffield Wednesday, Plymouth Argyle, Bradford City and Huddersfield Town all aiming to be in the mix.

Bromley, MK Dons and Cambridge United will all also be hoping to put in a strong performance in the division after earning automatic promotion from League Two.

It will be a difficult year to predict who will go up and who will go down, as any number of clubs could end up at either end of the table.

Here we use the Opta supercomputer to rank the team from 24 to one based on where they are predicted to finish in League One this season…

24 ? ? AFC Wimbledon

AFC Wimbledon have been given the greatest chance of finishing bottom of the League One table from 10,000 simulations of every game, which was done on 11 August.

The club have a 16.8 per cent chance of coming bottom, and an overall chance of 47.8 per cent of finishing inside the bottom four after narrowly avoiding the drop in 2025/26.

23 ? ? Peterborough United

Peterborough United have also been tipped to fall out of League One next season with a 23rd place finish.

The Posh finished 18th in 2025/26, and now have been given a 7.2 per cent chance of coming second from bottom in the upcoming campaign.

22 ? ? Bromley

Bromley are in League One as League Two champions, but they face a tough battle to remain in the division beyond one year.

The Ravens have been tipped to finish 22nd with a likelihood of 7.5 per cent, and an overall chance of relegation at 31.2 per cent.

21 ? ? Barnsley

Barnsley are the fourth team to be tipped for relegation by the Opta supercomputer, with a 6.5 per cent chance of coming 21st.

The Tykes have brought Daniel Stendel back as head coach in place of Conor Hourihane, but will have his work cut out for him based on this prediction.

20 ? ? Notts County

Notts County won the League Two play-offs last season to earn their place in the third tier, and are being tipped to survive in the division in 2026/27.

The Magpies have been given a prediction of a 20th place finish at a likelihood of 6.0 per cent.

19 ? ? MK Dons

MK Dons are another side to have earned promotion from League Two in the previous campaign, and will be feeling optimistic about their survival hopes.

And they’ve been given a prediction of 19th place in this model, with a 5.8 per cent chance of it coming to fruition.

18 ? ? Leyton Orient

Leyton Orient were in the 2025 play-off final, but fell to 20th under Richie Wellens last season, and have since lost top scorer Dom Ballard.

However, the O’s have been tipped to improve slightly to 18th in the season ahead, with a likelihood of 5.5 per cent.

17 ? ? Cambridge United

Cambridge are the fourth promoted side, and they’ve been given the best chance of survival in Opta’s supercomputer, and have been tipped to finish 17th, at a likelihood of 5.1 per cent.

16 ? ? Burton Albion

Burton Albion finished 17th in League One last season, five points clear of the relegation zone, and it’s been predicted that they’ll improve slightly to 16th in 2026/27.

The Brewers have been given a likelihood of 5.0 per cent to finish 16th.

15 ? ? Wigan Athletic

Wigan Athletic were just ahead of Burton last year, and it’s been predicted that they will do that again next season with a 4.4 per cent chance of finishing 15th.
