Lyon said on Friday that Orel Mangala has joined Getafe in La Liga on loan, with no option to buy. The Belgian international remains under contract at OL until 2028.
The club, who are trimming their squad, favoured the move to save, in principle, around half of the midfielder’s significant wages.
Already in Spain, Mangala will not be involved on Tuesday in the Champions League third qualifying round second leg against Sparta Prague.
Mangala arrived at OL in January 2024 on a paid loan from Nottingham Forest worth €11.7m. The €17.5m option was exercised five months later, tying him to 2028 during the Textor era. He was loaned to Everton at the end of August.
He regained minutes in the Premier League before a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in January 2025 ended his season. Back at Lyon after a long recovery, he made only 14 appearances last term, 27 in total for the club, and did not return in time for the World Cup with Belgium.
Despite a good pre-season, he was not expected to start at the beginning of 2026-27. The switch to Spain, where he will reunite with former team-mate Martin Satriano, could finally give him a full campaign. When he returns to Lyon in June, he would, in theory, have one final season left on his contract.
