Paraguay and Australia played out a goalless draw in Santa Clara that suited both teams' knockout ambitions. Australia dominated possession and created the better chances, but Orlando Gill produced a string of saves to preserve Paraguay's clean sheet and third place in Group D.
The Socceroos finished second and advanced to the Round of 16, while Paraguay await confirmation of their progress as one of the best third-placed teams. GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from Paraguay v Australia.
The Paraguay goalkeeper was the decisive figure in preserving a point that keeps his nation's World Cup hopes alive. Without his interventions, Australia would almost certainly have found the breakthrough their territorial dominance deserved.
Gill made a crucial early save to deny Jackson Irvine from close range in the fourth minute, tipping away a right-footed effort that represented Australia's best chance of the match. He then kept out Cristian Volpato's left-footed shot from inside the area in first-half stoppage time, stretching to push the ball away when the substitute seemed certain to score.
His continued alertness in the second half ensured Paraguay held firm despite facing sustained pressure. Gill's command of his area and confident handling denied Jordan Bos and Tete Yengi late efforts, ensuring Paraguay left California with their knockout hopes intact.
Australia's standout performer operated as the primary attacking outlet throughout the entire match. From his nominal right-sided position, Bos repeatedly drove at the Paraguay defence with pace and directness that caused problems from the opening minutes.
He had a shot saved by Gill in the 36th minute after receiving from Volpato and cutting inside onto his left foot. In the 89th minute, Bos drove into the area before attempting a curled left-footed effort aimed at the bottom corner that carried good shape but drifted past the post. His combination play with Volpato in the first half exploited space behind Maidana consistently.
Though Bos couldn't find the breakthrough Australia needed, his relentless threat ensured the Socceroos remained on the front foot. His dribbling ability regularly beat defenders one-on-one, giving Australia their clearest route to goal throughout the contest.
The left wing-back endured a difficult 45 minutes that forced Gustavo Alfaro into a tactical rethink at half-time. Operating in Paraguay's 5-4-1 formation, Maidana struggled to contain the dangerous combination of Volpato and Bos down Australia's right side.
Frequently outnumbered and outmaneuvered, Maidana found himself unable to track the overlapping runs and quick interchanges that carved open Paraguay's left flank throughout the first half. The defensive vulnerability on his side was evident as Australia dominated territory and created their best chances through his zone.
Alfaro's decision to withdraw Maidana for Mauricio at the interval was a direct response to his struggles. The substitution, which saw Galarza drop deeper to cover the left side, immediately improved Paraguay's defensive stability and proved crucial to their ability to hold on for the draw.
