Marcos made an unusual Dérbi debut in 1997, entering from the bench to replace striker Oséas after Palmeiras keeper Velloso and Corinthians forward Donizete were sent off. It was an early chapter in a rivalry that would later define him.

After returning to the bench at the end of 1996, Marcos had limited chances in 1997, featuring in only 11 matches. His first Dérbi arrived on 28 September in the Campeonato Brasileiro, the 27th appearance of his Palmeiras career, as reported by Nosso Palestra.

Six minutes into the second half at Morumbi, referee Ubiraci Damásio de Oliveira dismissed Velloso and Donizete following a confrontation. At nine minutes, Oséas, who had scored before the interval, made way for Marcos. One minute later Mirandinha headed in, his second of the afternoon.

Oséas said sacrificing a forward is customary after a goalkeeper’s dismissal and felt Marcos immediately showed personality in a contest charged with meaning. He recalled the week-long build-up and intense preparation that always surrounded meetings with the club’s main rival.

From the other side, Donizete recalled that adrenaline contributed to the flashpoint and said no player wants a red card. Three years later, he wore green.

Curiously, the goal Marcos conceded came at the same end and side where, almost three years on, he would save Marcelinho’s Libertadores penalty wearing 1 instead of 12. Donizete later lauded Marcos as a leader and exemplary professional deserving great respect.
