Osvaldo Bagnoli, Hellas Verona’s 1984-85 title-winning coach, dies aged 91 | OneFootball

Osvaldo Bagnoli, who coached Hellas Verona to the 1984-85 Serie A title, has died aged 91. According to L'Équipe, he passed away on Friday morning.

Italian football is in mourning.

Bagnoli’s Verona defied the Calcio establishment in 1984-85 to lift the Scudetto. That campaign began with global stars arriving, Diego Maradona at Napoli, Socrates at Fiorentina, Junior at Torino and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge at Inter Milan, joining established names Michel Platini at Juventus and Zico at Udinese.

Verona led from the first round to the last, starting with a 3-1 win over Maradona’s Napoli.

They played a simple, effective style, animated by the surges of Preben Elkjaer Larsen and the grit of Hans-Peter Briegel. Verona’s Scudetto remains the only one since Serie A’s creation in 1928-29 won by a club from a city that is not a regional capital.
