A Bola reports that Benfica want Nicolás Otamendi to stay into 2026/27, with his contract in its final months, but the captain has not committed and will reveal his decision only once the season ends.
Rui Costa and José Mourinho have both expressed a desire to extend the defender’s deal.
Even so, the Argentine could opt for a significant change next season. He remains focused on delivering his best, with the 2026 World Cup in mind. After that tournament he will retire from international football, which could see him consider other destinations, including Saudi Arabia.
It is no secret that Mourinho admires the World Cup-winning veteran, yet his future at Benfica is entirely in Otamendi’s hands. For now he is working to be in peak shape for selection for the meeting with Vitória de Guimarães.
Valued at 1 million euros, Otamendi has played 43 times this season for Benfica, with 24 in Liga Portugal Betclic, 14 in the Champions League, two in the Taça de Portugal, two in the Taça da Liga and one in the Supertaça. Across 3,809 minutes, he has scored three goals.
