Mikel Oyarzabal climbed to seventh on Spain’s all-time scoring list with 29 goals after striking twice against Austria at the 2026 World Cup, moving past Fernando Morientes and drawing level with Fernando Hierro.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, Spain travelled to the United States, Canada and Mexico among the favourites, although an uneven group stage left Luis de la Fuente’s side seeking fluency in the knockouts.
Austria awaited in the round of 32, a sticky opponent that promised a stern test. On paper Spain held the edge, but Austria had enough to punish any slow start, which did not materialise.
Oyarzabal turned in the opener from a Marc Cucurella cut-back, then added his second after half-time. He is Spain’s leading scorer at this tournament with four goals.
He has overtaken Morientes on 27 and is level with Hierro.
The top five are David Villa 59, Raúl 44, Fernando Torres 38, Álvaro Morata 37 and David Silva 35. With 35 marking fifth place, a top five berth could be within reach later in his career.
