João Palhinha has accepted Benfica’s proposal, yet Bayern Munich’s stance remains the key obstacle to finalising a move in this window, according to Glorioso 1904.
The Bayern midfielder is a priority for Marco Silva and the club, and acceptance of the salary package is a decisive step. Despite a wage level high by Portuguese standards, the defensive midfielder has agreed salary terms and a four-year contract with the board led by Rui Costa.
An initial loan bid fell through, with Bayern rejecting it as they want to recoup part of their outlay with the player in the latter stage of his deal. A permanent transfer is now on the table, around €25 million, with payment split across two seasons.
Benfica will not go overboard, but Marco Silva is desperate to add Palhinha’s dynamism, aggression and leadership to midfield. In the six role, Enzo Barrenechea has been used most often.
Last season with Tottenham, Palhinha played 45 matches, scoring seven goals and supplying two assists. The 31-year-old was decisive for Spurs in the final stretch of the Premier League.
