Abel Ferreira left Nubank Parque frustrated by Palmeiras’ goalless draw with Internacional and warned that a similar problem could confront them at 19:00 on Wednesday, when they host Cerro Porteño in the Libertadores last 16. According to Globo.com, he expects the Paraguayans to sit deep and look to break.
The coach anticipates tight man-marking, quick transitions and a threat from set plays, a blueprint that has troubled his side this season. He said Palmeiras must be prepared at home and aim to strike first.
The issue surfaced in May in a 1-1 league draw with Remo. It reappeared in the 2-1 defeat to Atlético-MG on 26 July, when Palmeiras struggled to attack space in behind, even with Paulinho on the pitch. On Sunday, Internacional’s back five was rarely breached.
Palmeiras have two days of training, plus a Wednesday morning session, to work on solutions. This time the tie will be decided away on 19 August in Asunción, unlike in 2025.
Bruno Fuchs, Jefté, Khellven and Paulinho remain unavailable. As for Gustavo Gómez, who has been working separately while recovering from a thigh injury, Abel said they must wait to see how the week develops.
