Palmeiras have announced the signing of centre-back Alexander Barboza on Friday morning. He can only make his debut from 20 July, after the pause for the World Cup.

The contract runs until December 2028, with an option to extend for one further season. According to Globo.com, the fee is US$ four million, around R$ 20 million, to be paid in four instalments. The first, worth close to R$ six million, has already been sent to Botafogo.

Barboza bade farewell to Botafogo earlier in the day and is delighted with the new challenge in Brazilian football. He is confident it can work out, plans to work hard and believes supporters can expect total commitment, adding he hopes to bring joy once he starts.

Left-footed, the defender is noted for physical presence and aerial strength. His career includes Atlético Rafaela-ARG, Defensa y Justicia, Independiente and Libertad-PAR, having come through River Plate’s academy.

At Palmeiras he will reunite with midfielder Marlon Freitas, his Botafogo team-mate in the 2024 Brasileirão and Conmebol Libertadores title wins. Conversations with Marlon Freitas and Giay highlighted the club’s structure and daily work, and he already knows the stadium and its new pitch.

Beyond Barboza, Palmeiras’ centre-back options include Gustavo Gómez, Benedetti, Murilo and Bruno Fuchs.
